If you’ve never booked a newborn photography session before, it can feel a little overwhelming. When should you book? What happens if baby arrives early? What do you need to bring? The good news is that the process is designed to be simple and relaxed from the very beginning.
Bringing home a new baby is one of those seasons that somehow feels both slow and incredibly fast. The sleepless nights may feel long, but those tiny fingers, sleepy expressions, newborn stretches, and curled-up little poses change before you know it. As a newborn photographer in Wylie, TX, my goal is to preserve those details while creating a relaxed experience for both you and your baby.
At Jayme King Photography, newborn sessions take place in my cozy in-home studio in Wylie, where everything is prepared before you arrive. I have been photographing newborns since 2012, and every session is planned around your baby's comfort, safety, and individual needs.
Booking Your Newborn Session
Whether you are expecting your first baby or adding another little one to your family, here is what you can expect from your newborn photography session.
The best time to book your newborn session is during your second or early third trimester. We’ll reserve your due date on my calendar, and once your baby arrives, you’ll simply send me a message so we can choose your official session date. Babies rarely follow an exact schedule, so there is plenty of flexibility built into the process.
Booking ahead also gives us plenty of time to start planning the details of your session without you having to worry about finding a newborn photographer after your baby is already here.
Planning Your Newborn Photos
After booking, you will receive a questionnaire that helps me learn more about your family and the style you envision for your baby's portraits.
We will discuss things such as colors you love, colors you would prefer to avoid, props, wraps, outfits, and the overall look you would like for your session. Depending on the newborn collection you choose, we can also plan photographs with parents and siblings.
My studio has a large collection of newborn wraps, outfits, headbands, bonnets, props, and accessories, so you do not need to go shopping specifically for your session.
The evening before you arrive, I prepare the studio and your planned setups so everything is ready for your family.

Preparing for Your Newborn Session
One of the questions parents frequently ask is, “What do I need to do before newborn pictures?”
The answer is actually very simple: care for your baby the way you normally would. Before your session, I’ll send you helpful preparation information so you know exactly what to expect. There is no need to dramatically change your baby’s routine before arriving. Feed, soothe, and care for your little one as you normally would, and bring anything you may need for feeding, diaper changes, or comfort. My Wylie newborn photography studio will already be warm, calm, and fully prepared with your planned wraps, props, layers, and setups before you walk through the door.
What Happens When You Arrive at the Studio?
On session day, there is no pressure for your baby to behave a certain way or stay asleep the entire time. Newborn sessions are completely baby-led, which means we stop whenever your little one needs to eat, be changed, cuddled, or simply take a break. I allow plenty of time so we can move at your baby’s pace, and safety and comfort are always my highest priorities.
Depending on the collection you choose, we may also include photographs with parents and siblings before focusing on baby alone. Once those are complete, you are welcome to stay nearby, relax on the couch, enjoy a refreshment, or simply watch your baby’s session unfold.
Choosing Your Newborn Images
After your session, I carefully select and professionally edit the strongest images from your newborn gallery. You will receive an online proofing gallery where you can select the photographs included with your collection. Your newborn portraits do not have to live only on your phone or computer, either. You will also have the opportunity to purchase heirloom artwork, including albums, folio boxes, Triplexes, and beautiful wall art. Depending on the newborn collection you choose, you may also receive a print credit to use toward artwork for your home.
When you look back at these photographs years from now, my hope is that you won’t simply remember what your baby looked like — you’ll remember how tiny they felt in your arms and what this incredible season of your family’s story felt like.

How Long Does a Newborn Photography Session Take?
The length of your newborn session depends on the collection you choose as well as your baby's individual needs.
My Petite Newborn Session typically lasts approximately 1–2 hours and is designed as a simpler experience focusing on wrapped images of baby.
The Signature Newborn Session generally lasts approximately 2–3 hours and allows additional variety along with the option to include parents and siblings.
The Full Newborn Experience may last approximately 3–4 hours, giving us the most time for baby, parents, siblings, additional setups, feeding breaks, and soothing.
These timeframes give us plenty of flexibility without rushing your baby.
What About Older Siblings?
Sibling photographs are some of my favorite images to create because this is such a big milestone for them too. Depending on their age, we keep sibling portraits simple, safe, and fun. Young children are never expected to sit perfectly and smile on command. Instead, I work with their personality and comfort level. Sometimes the sweetest sibling images happen when an older brother or sister is simply snuggling beside the new baby, giving a tiny kiss, or looking at their newest family member.
When parent and sibling photographs are included in your collection, we normally photograph those earlier in the session so older children do not have to wait through the entire newborn portion.
When Should I Book Newborn Pictures?
If you are currently expecting, you do not need to wait until your baby arrives to contact me. Booking during pregnancy gives us the opportunity to reserve space around your due date and plan your session ahead of time. Then, once your baby arrives, we simply finalize the details.
